Call for Corsham 10K volunteers

Your club needs you!

This message is for all club members, new beginners and old hands – previous 10k volunteers, those already ‘signed up’ to run or as volunteer and particularly those who don’t know how they can help (yet).

In 6 weeks time the Corsham Running Club will be hosting their biggest annual 10k & fun run race event. Last year was a massive success and this year we already have record numbers signed up. To make this year the best yet we need volunteers, LOTS of volunteers. This is your chance to give back to the club and an opportunity to support other runners.

You might have told us already that you can help – if so, please click on the Survey Monkey link below so that we can make doubly sure we have your details and any preferences. With so much to think about it also helps the 10k committee keep all this information in one place.

If you are planning to run the race you can still help with the fun run or some jobs before the race starts – please use the link below to indicate if this is the case.

If you’re not planning to run the race and haven’t yet told us you can help – please also click on the Survey Monkey link below. Don’t be shy, there’s a range of jobs to choose from; none of them difficult – all of them fun (promise!).

We need over 75 people to make this event happen, so please also rope in any family members, friends or perhaps aspiring runners. You can provide us with their details too using the link below.

Please complete by Tuesday the 20th of March after which we will allocate all jobs and get back to you with further details. If you have any questions, please e-mail machteld.luff@gmail.com.

Thanks for your support,

The Corsham Running Club 10k committee

Larmer Tree Half Marathon Report by David Mackie

Dan Harman, Dave Mackie, Alan Kember and Gavin Johnson travelled to the far south of Wiltshire to partake in White Star Running’s Larmer Tree Half. All enjoyed the splendid off road route round the rolling hills, woods and fields surrounding Larmer Tree Gardens. Going was moist to muddy but pretty good, and the weather benign but unfortunately misty so views from the top of the hills obscured. Dan and Alan, in his first off road half, started and stayed strong to finish 14 and 22 respectively in a field of 332 runners and under two hours, with Dave and Gavin slightly further back. It being White Star, their already good value race was improved by delivering a 14.3 mile “half” course. In sum, great & sporty course, super organisation and spectacular peacock based bling made it an event to enjoy and remember; put it or one of the other equally fab White Star Running events in your running “to do” list.

Lungbuster Report by Alison Graham

This was the sixth race in the 2016/17 Wiltshire off-road race league. Four club members ran: Alison Graham, Chris Hunt, Paul Scotford and Stewart Unsworth – and came over the finish line in alphabetical order! Alison and Stewart were only half recovered from torn muscle injuries, and Chris hadn’t run for ages (but had done a lot of cycling!) so it was all down to Paul who had valiantly turned up to boost CRC points in the team placements in the league. The terrain was undulating and seasonally squelchy. Not particularly daunting, with mist obscuring what would have been fine views. The only challenging section was ‘Lungbuster Hill’, comparable to the Sting (Slaughterford 9). Everyone walked up it. Jellybabies were on hand. I took this race steady, concentrated on what my injury was telling me, and with that to focus on, didn’t notice the miles fly by. I didn’t take off at a silly pace at the start, and felt fresh at the end. It felt more like a weekend steady run, with a time to match. I had to do this run to make sure I scored points in the league. There was one exciting bit at the end. I had gradually closed down on another vf50 (who usually thrashes me), and surmised – correctly – that she also was coming back from injury. We ran neck and neck for the last km. With the finish gantry in sight, I had to pick the moment to break away and sprint. I fully expected to see her flash past, but I beat her by a scary two seconds.

Well done to all CRC members. A good, well marshalled race.

Cotswold Way Relay – WOW!

I have managed to fill the Cotswold Way Relay 3 teams in record time this year, I sent my request around 16:30 on Tuesday and had 30 volunteers within 16 hours and I also now have 5 reserves. It looks like we’re going to have a ladies team, a mixed team and a gents team (although it will have 1 lady in it).

If you would still like to volunteer (and there are a few regulars not in my 35) then that’s great as it will mean that we could either have 4 teams (which will increase our fee to around £8.50 each) or give us lots of options as injuries are likely.

Based on what everyone has told me, I have the 3 teams penciled in as follows: –

Leg 1 – Carl Zalek, Dave Bethune, Yuka Morrell

Leg 2 – Pierre Lacrouts, Dan Harman; Debra Kearsey

Leg 3 – Dave Mackie, Dave Aplin, Mo Maddock

Leg 4 – Alison Collins, Oscar Stringer, Stewart Unsworth

Leg 5 – Jon Morrell, Christine Bott, Lauren Edwards

Leg 6 – Lucy Bright, Craig Rumble, Danny Clenaghan

Leg 7 – Dave Camm, Diane Aldridge, Adrian Finch

Leg 8 – Carol Langley-Johnson, Jane Clarke, Laura Sheppard

Leg 9 – Max Luff, Richard Biggs, Jane Tunnicliffe

Leg 10 – Georgina Taylor, Chris Hunt, Simon Ratcliff

Reserves – Rachel Cannon, Lee Davis, Alan Kember, Steve Parham, Carly Corlett

Any problems then please let me know by emailing carlzalek@gmail.com or through Facebook.

Cotswold Way Relay 2017

I am looking for volunteers for the COTSWOLD WAY RELAY.

For those of you unaware, the Cotswold Way Relay is a 10 stage relay race along the length of the Cotswold Way from Chipping Campden (on the Worcestershire/Gloucestershire border) to Bath Abbey.

The website hasn’t been updated for 2017 but the date is always the last Saturday in June so it will be June 24th this year.

The legs range in length from 7-13 miles and they’re all hilly and cross country. We place no emphasis on ability and everyone is welcome to join in, even if you just want to walk it. It is self navigation but with 100 teams entering, the opportunities to get lost are minimal. The route is pretty well signposted; certainly much better than my first year; and many people will do a recce beforehand.

Speak to me or anyone who has run it before and they’ll all tell you what a great event this is.

We are hoping to enter 3 teams again this year and the committee have agreed to fund £250 so the costs will be between £4-£5 each if we get 3 teams or probably free if we get 2 teams.

I’d love to get a ladies team this year and the biggest challenge for that is the longer legs, especially further north, so if you’re one of our long distance ladies and don’t mind getting up at silly hours then please volunteer for leg 1, 2 or 4 especially.

As some people missed out last year, there will be some priorities for those but if you are interested then please email me at carlzalek@gmail.com or speak to me on club night or message me on Facebook and I’ll make a note of everything and try and squeeze you all in.

I plan to have the teams mostly sorted by the end of next month so let me know ASAP.
Thanks

Carl Zalek
