Weekly Review – Week Ending 7th April

There are 2 easy to read signs that summer running has returned.

1. Big city marathons

2. Weekday races

And we’ve had both this week.

Tom Frost was our sole representative at the first of the AVR 5k series in Steeple Ashton, finishing in an excellent 4th place.

Matt Wills was extolling the benefits of our hill sessions at training as he did the West Buckland School, Exmoor Run, 10 miles and much quicker than he’s ever done it previously. The real twist is that you have to walk 7 miles just to get to the start line.

And as the picture shows, it was a very damp and cold race.

The rescheduled Lungbuster took place and we had 5 runners there, with all of them getting a PB. Well done to Chris Hunt, Nick Maryon, Annika Davidson, Becky Townsend and Christine Bott.

We also had 4 runners at the Devizes half marathon. Where there were PBs for Stewart Unsworth and David Aplin, Stewart taking 2.5 minutes off and finishing under 100 minutes for the first time.

And now for the big city marathons. We had 4 members at Manchester while the Mackies went to Rotterdam. Fantastic performances all around with 5 PBs and a time close to her PB for Jo Gill.

Craig Rumble led the way with a 2:52:20, Jon Morell just behind at 2:53:34. Mark Cain got a 3:42:46, 24 minutes faster than his time from London last year with Jo doing 3:49:58.

Across the water in the Netherlands, Dave Mackie finished Rotterdam in 3:32:11 for a 40 minute PB and Sue Mackie had a 30 minute PB going round in 5:04:29. They even got Sue’s brother Keith to wear a Corsham vest as he did when he joined us at Endure 24 last year.

Of course as it’s now summer, this week sees the first of our very popular away run schedule on Thursday 11th with the traditional opener from the White Horse in Biddestone starting at the slighter earlier time of 6:45. Do join us for a run and maybe a beer afterwards.

For those of you wondering how all of those excellent marathon times are achieved, thinking it must be the hours of training (of which there were many), time and miles on feet (of which there were many). Doing tempos and hills all by themselves (of which there were many). Well please see the evidence from the night before of the real secret to speedy marathons.
